A STUDENT COLLEAGUE AND LIFELONG FRIEND

Created by STEPHEN 2 years ago

I first met Brian as a young undergraduate town planning student, as we embarked on our degree course together at the Polytechnic of the South Bank in 1973.  It soon became apparent to me that not only was he a very talented scholar with a real passion for his chosen profession, but - not always a given - his academic prowess and perceptiveness was matched by a wonderful affinity with his peer group and sense of fun.  Many in our graduating class of 1977, in which Brian was one of our 'stars', went on to become lifelong friends.  These friendships have endured despite the passage of time and - in my own case - relocation to Australia.  The bonds we formed in our student days are evident whenever we are able to meet up again, and I was so pleased to have been able to see Brian (with his young family) here in this country some years ago, as well as on a number of occasions back in England, including after the onset of his illness.

As many will be aware, Brian built on those student days in the most formidable way, rising to the Presidency of the Royal Town Planning Institute, with a real commitment to improving the places in which we live, work and play. His career and dedication to  planning for the future of our society demonstrated a real sense of vocation - he was certainly an inspiration in my own career and I'm sure to very many others.

On a personal level, Brian always remained so approachable and interested in the lives of his former student colleagues, with a wonderful sense of humour, including a cheerful acceptance of the fluctuating fortunes of his beloved Fulham FC - Brian, they've just been promoted again!

His love for Alice and Ollie was always very apparent when we met, and I felt he endured his illness and the changed circumstances of more recent years with great stoicism and dignity.

You have been taken from us far too soon, my friend - it was a privilege to have known you.
